The chapter at hand "Quick Tour" is one of several chapters of the Helios manual. It can be read independently from the other chapters and serves as a quick overview of the most important functions of Helios. Helios was designed to be highly user friendly. In this chapter you can acquaint yourself with the fundamental functions, and after that you should have no troubles using Helios.
At the first start of Helios the window will look like this:
The window is composed as follows:
Basic data on sun position: This function is activated by default and allows to calculate the sun position, the twilight phases, and the global radiation for an arbitrary location. If sample points exist in the 3d scene, the results on solar radiation at these sample points are also shown here.
Miniframe with sun position: Creates a small window on the desktop which stays in the foreground and displays the current sun position for the given location.
Create data series: Allows to create data series in order to visualize the movement of the sun or the course of the global radiation. The results can be saved in a csv file.
Calculate point from shadow: Allows to calculate the position of a point by looking at its shadow cast at two different times.
Shadow and energy calculation in 3d scene: For an existing 3d scene the shadows cast by the objects in this scene and the energy output (of a photovoltaic solar power plant) at the different sample points can be calculated.
Editor for 3d scene: With this function a 3d scene can be created and edited. 3d scenes can be saved in a file for later use.
Miniframewhere the complete window is invisible, and for the function
Editor for 3d scenewhere the basic input frame is replaced by the editor window.
Basic data on the sun positionis chosen. Please note: If the function
Miniframeis chosen, the window shown above disappears and only a small frame containing the current sun position is shown in the foreground. If the function
Shadow and energy calculation in 3d sceneor
Editor for 3d sceneis chosen, the right half of the window disappears and a separate window containing the 3d scene is shown.
In this chapter "Quick Tour" the following functions are explained:
Basic data on the sun position.
All functions not covered in this chapter are explained in the next chapter of the manual.
